The problem with chain length is that it is not just specific to the guide bar length; the make of chainsaw will also have a bearing.
This means that if you ask for a chain to fit an 18" guide bar, you might get the right length, or you might not. An 18" bar on a Stihl chainsaw will likely need a different length chain to the 18" bar fitted to Husqvarna, and that's where the problem starts.
